Battle at the Birthplace, Attendance: 16,178
What a great day for outdoor wrestling on the east coast, upper 60’s and sunny. I bet that at least a couple of wrestlers got sunburn during the match. Last year at this time there was snow on the ground, this year I’m guessing that a couple thousand fans tanned or burned too. While it was too early for the teams to be peaking for this both took this match very seriously. Rutgers did a great job promoting the event and the fans got their moneys worth. Both teams had what I’d call surprise wins or upsets. Both teams had guys lose with bad strategies, like winning close. Kids don’t game plan to win close, friends don’t let friends plan to win on the final takedown.
I’d love to say all teams should try this type of an event but playing the weather odds can be dangerous unless you have a good backup plan. Rutgers won on the mat and off today.
