#5 Virginia Tech over #9 Lehigh 21-15

Video highlights in process

A very solid VT team came rolled into the Lehigh Valley last night to take on a slightly depleted Mountain Hawk team in front of 1,600 wrestling fans. The dual started out with two top 8 foes going at it and the Mountain Hawks getting the upset, which set a tone of possible dual upset in the crowd. Both early matches were split and low scoring affairs where match strategy was on display. At 141 Randy Cruz got the Grace Hall faithful on their feet when he got the early fall on an adjustment from a gator roll. At 157 both wrestlers were ranked in the top 10 and Solomon Chishko, who looked a bit more tired than his opponent, got the win in sudden victory by staying focused. Mastriani pushed the pace at 157 but just missed bonus points. Lehigh got out to an early lead at 65 but settled for a close victory. 174 featured the highest ranked match up of the evening with Lehigh’s Preisch getting the upset special that I called over Zach Epperly in a low scoring affair in sudden victory. After that it was all VT as they pulled away to close the dual out. Ty Walz got his 100th victory while setting a torrid pace at 285 to close out the dual chasing elusive bonus points.
If you’ve seen much wrestling this season one thing stands out from the refs; inconsistent application of the drop down stalling rules which almost affected the 197lb match outcome and the out of bounds stalling calls. The difference of how these two rules are applied is drastic. I’m not pointing fingers at the refs. College wrestling has done it’s best to not follow the international styles push out call but has to admit failure and adopt the international style out of bounds call once and for all. The constant rule changes are tediously inconsistently called and confusing to all involved: wrestlers, refs, coaches and fans and maybe most importantly to the casual watcher.
