Maroulis gets gold, Lampe silver and Carlson bronze at Open Cup in Russia

NOVOCHEBOKSARK, Russia – The United States claimed three medals on the first day of the Open Cup of Russia on Friday.

Claiming at gold medal at 55 kg/121 lbs. was two-time World medalist Helen Maroulis (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids), who finished with a perfect 5-0 record in the tournament.

Maroulis defeated 2014 World silver medalist Irina Ologonova of Russia by technical fall, 13-3 in the gold-medal finals. She had three technical falls, a pin and an injury default win on the way to the title. Maroulis was a 2012 World silver medalist and 2014 World bronze medalist.

Two-time World bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) claimed a silver medal at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., falling to Valentina Islamova of Russia in the finals, 1-12. Lampe won her first three matches to reach the finals, including two victories by technical fall.

Claiming a bronze medal at 69 kg/152 lbs. was 2013 World Team member Veronica Carlson (Colorado Springs, Colo. /New York AC), who defeated a Russian opponent in the bronze-medal round by technical fall. Carlson finished with a 3-1 record, only losing a semifinal bout to a Russian by a 2-6 margin.
