Weighing In with 2018 NCAA Champ Yianni Diakomihalis

I spoke with Yianni earlier today about his incredible run at the 2018 NCAA Championships. He won the title at 141lbs with a torn ACL. This may have been the most physically and mentally tough display by an athlete in my long but spotty memory. Can you imagine a basketball, baseball or football player for that matter doing something comparable? I laugh at the very thought. Yianni is having surgery tomorrow and expects to be back in 6 months. Sounds quick to me but healthy youngsters generally heal up ahead of the adult schedule. I imagine that he’d return slowly, making sure that he’s totally ready to go for championship season.

Yianni is the most mentally prepared freshman wrestler that I’ve seen in a very long time. Rewatch his NCAA matches or Drexel and Princeton matches. Hope that he heals up quickly.
