If you weren’t in Lawrenceville New Jersey last night you missed a crazy early season match between to relatively new foes. Penn drew for a random weight class start and Jake Hendriz at 174 opened the match with a win. Then Rider cruised out to a 7-point lead before Penn had two falls to put themselves in the catbird seat with a 5-point lead with two matches remaining. The final two Rider wrestlers came up big and won the final 2 bouts sealing the match for the Broncs.
Both teams had relatively inexperienced lineups and it showed at times. In the end one or two mental lapses made all the difference for the Penn team. This isn’t your older brother’s Penn team. This team looks mentally tougher than any Penn team that I’ve seen in the last few years. Rider lost a bunch of senior leadership but looks like there is a mental determination that will let them improve from here.
Next up Penn hosts Maryland at the Palestra December 2ndat 4PM. Rider will be at Rutgers December 16 for a little instate clash a long time in the making.
