Council Rock South ran away with another regional title tonight in Souderton. While they weren’t as dominating as they were at last year’s regionals, a nearly impossible task. The team race was never in question. The real surprise was there closest opponent was cross town rival CR North, who matched them with 3 individual champions.
The South East region may have more wrestlers than any similar sized region in the world. The biggest youth league in the country is in this area (ICWL) too. I didn’t want to talk about a sensitive topic when I covered this event last year but I can’t bite my tongue any longer. Sitting matside for roughly 20 matches I was struck by some of the awful coaching this region has. It’s the coaching that is holding the region back from being a true powerhouse. Other than a few programs I hear better coaching at many youth wrestling events, which sounds shocking as I type this. Let that sink in for a moment. Many of these High School coaches only had kids in the placement matches because parents are seeking outside coaching or they had a great youth wrestling coach. It’s a crime that there aren’t better coaches in area High Schools that really get the sport or coaching. I guess that’s just HS athletics these days. Math teacher by day, wrestling coach for the extra cash by night.
Finals Video will be posted tomorrow
