Ty Walz just finished his second season as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, Virginia Tech. He’s also on the Team USA’s national team.
In his second season at VT, Walz helped lead the Hokies to top 11 finish at the NCAA Championships. They also had their first national Champ.
As a resident athlete with the Southeast Regional Training Center, Walz won gold at the Bill Farrell Memorial Open at 97 kg and won a bronze medal at the U23 World Championships in Poland. Walz also placed second at the Cerro Pelado in Cuba February 2018, his second medal competing in freestyle.
Walz was the 2017 ACC Champion at heavyweight and was a three-time All-American for the Hokies from 2015-17, placing seventh once and fourth twice. At the time of his graduation, Walz’s 109 career wins ranked 10th in program history and his .784 career winning percentage tied for 11th.
