A brief history of the process of bringing men’s and women’s wrestling to Slippery Rock University.
The University provided a letter of understanding to a group of alumni detailing a fundraising requirement – to be conducted under the auspices of SRU Foundation, Inc. – of $5 million with a deadline of Dec. 31, 2021, in order for the University to consider adding men’s and women’s wrestling to its current roster of NCAA-sanctioned sports.
As of Aug. 31, 2020, no monies have yet been raised toward that fundraising goal. Zero. This, when combined with the COVID-19 economic lock down, and the impact it has had on higher education, fiscally, academically as well as athletically, makes it unlikely that men’s and women’s wrestling programs will be realized at SRU in the near future.
This is more bad news for wrestling. I know that scholarships and coaching positions are being cut in many budgets as we breathe.
